Welcome to Backyard Bounty, a locally owned business operated by Dawn Myers in Gibsons, BC. I have been growing organic vegetables for family and friends for over twenty years. In 2008, despite not having my own land, I decided to begin a business, growing produce for others. I started a small CSA program and sold at the Gibsons Farmer's Market. What a great success it was - far exceeding my expectations! This success gave me the confidence to double my production in 2009, and I will be doing so again this year. |

How do I achieve this without land? I base my business on the SPIN farming model. SPIN farming is a proven, intensive growing technique ideal for sub-acre farming that encourages the use of vacant land in urban settings.
Currently, I use nine different plots of land, all donated by people in the Gibsons area who love to see an abundance of organically grown veggies growing in their very own backyards!
I wouldn't have a business at all without the extraordinary goodwill and support of these people who allow me to use their land. Thank you so much!
I base my business on two main principals:
-
Quality. Locally grown food supports sustainability, but more than that, vegetables simply taste better when they are grown locally, free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and harvested only when they are ripe.
-
Community. Farming locally, and buying locally brings the community together. Neighbor is connected to neighbor, and everyone is connected again to the land that grows their food.
What I grow
The fruit of the land is wonderfully diverse and it is my intention to bring that diversity to you. Here are just some of the varieties of vegetables I have planned for this season: arugula, beans, beets, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, cucumbers, edamame (fresh soybeans), eggplant, garlic, annual herbs (basil, parsley, dill), kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce and other greens, melons, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, summer squash, swiss chard, tomatoes, winter squash and zucchini. For a complete list of produce and their approximate availability through the season click on harvest schedule.
The Logo
Rooney is a lovable and frenetic dog that lives with Lee Ann Johnson. He loves to dash in circles around the garden at full speed. It's quite a sight! Lee Ann was the first person to offer me the use of her land (thank you, thank you Lee Ann), so I wanted to acknowledge Lee Ann's support and remember the beginnings of my business.
